There is no strict legal minimum age for camel riding in Morocco. Operators commonly recommend at least 4, but the rule is set by the operator and the activity, not by a national law. A short ride with an adult is a different decision from a 7 hour desert day.
The useful answer is not one number. It is a set of questions. Does the child ride with an adult? How long is the ride? How hot is the day? Does the activity include a quad or a long drive? Those details decide more than the age on the booking page.
Karim is not a parent. This guide combines his knowledge of Morocco with current operator listings and family guidance, checked in October 2026. Read more about Karim. It is part of our desert with kids coverage. For the camp choice, read the Merzouga camps with private bathrooms guide.
What age can children ride camels in Morocco? The short answer
The common age of 4 is a planning guide, not a law. One operator may take a 3 year old on a short ride with a parent. Another may refuse a 4 year old because the activity as a whole is not suitable for under 4s.
Height and confidence can matter more than the birthday, but the operator still has the final say.
Why there is no national rule
Morocco does not publish a single camel riding age for tourists. Camel rides are run by camps, guides, hotels and tour companies. Each one sets its own rules and its own risk assessment.
That is why the advice online conflicts. One source says 4. Another says all ages. The same family guidance also says children under about 5 to 7 usually ride with a parent. They can all be right for different operators.
The rule can also change with the ride. A short loop near a hotel is not the same as a long trek into the dunes. A 7 hour tour with pickup, sandboarding and dinner is a different day again.
What the listings actually say
Two listings show the range.
The Merzouga camel trek in the camp guide is a 7 hour activity with pickup, a camel ride, sandboarding and dinner. The listing says it is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
That does not mean a toddler should do it. Seven hours is a long day with a child, even before the camel. The listing is telling you there is no stated age cut. It is not telling you the day will fit a 2 year old.
One Agafay activity is the opposite. The combined quad, camel and dinner listing is not suitable for children under 4. Its camel note says rides are suitable for most ages around 2 to 70. The age limit applies to the whole activity, which includes the quad. For the wider choice, read Agafay vs Sahara with kids.
That is the detail to read carefully. The camel may be fine. The rest of the day may not be.
Age bands
Use this as a planning guide, not a rule. The operator decides.
| Age | What usually works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Under 4 | A short ride with an adult, if the operator allows it | The age rule, the saddle and the ride length |
| 4 to 6 | A short ride, usually with an adult | The adult sharing rule and the handler |
| 7 to 12 | A longer ride, alone or with an adult | Confidence, heat and the route |
| Teenager | A longer trek, if the operator allows | Fitness, helmet policy and the return time |
A 4 year old is not automatically ready. A 6 year old who is scared of heights is not ready either. The child’s reaction to the animal matters more than the birthday. For the wider age decision, read the best age to take kids to Morocco.
Riding with an adult or alone
Young children usually ride with a parent on the same camel. Older children may ride alone with guides nearby. Ask which one your child will do.
A child on the same camel needs an adult who can hold on and keep the child in place. The adult cannot also hold a phone, a water bottle and a bag. Keep the ride short and the hands free.
A child on a separate camel needs to follow instructions, stay seated and manage the camel’s movement. That is a lot for a 5 year old. Ask whether a handler will walk beside the camel.
The 7 hour Merzouga offer
The Merzouga offer is a real option for an older child who wants the full desert evening. It includes pickup, a camel ride, sandboarding and dinner in a luxury camp. The listing says all ages and fitness levels.
The caveat is the length. Seven hours with a toddler is not a toddler day. The heat, the late dinner and the return can be the hardest part. A short camel ride near the camp is the better first experience for a young child.
If your child is under 6, treat this as a maybe, not a default. Ask whether the camel ride can be shortened, whether the child can ride with an adult and what happens if the child refuses.
What to ask before you book
Add the practical questions:
- Is the saddle suitable for a child?
- Does a handler walk beside the camel?
- Are there rest stops and water?
- Is the route in the shade at any point?
- What is the cancellation policy if the child refuses?
Get the answer in writing. A phone call is not a booking.
If the child is scared or too small
Do not force a camel ride. A scared child on a tall animal is a risk for the child and the handler.
A short walk in the dunes, a 4x4 transfer, sandboarding or dinner at the camp can be enough. The desert does not need a camel to be memorable.
If the child is too small for the ride, ask whether an adult can hold them on a short loop. If the operator says no, accept it. The next trip is soon enough.
FAQ
What is the minimum age for a camel ride in Morocco?
There is no national legal minimum. Operators commonly recommend at least 4, but the rule varies by operator and activity. Ask the operator for the minimum age for the exact ride you are booking.
Can a 2 year old ride a camel in Morocco?
Sometimes, on a short ride with an adult and only if the operator allows it. One listing says camel rides suit most ages around 2 to 70, while the same activity excludes children under 4 because it includes a quad. Ask about the exact activity.
Do children ride alone or with a parent?
Children under about 5 to 7 usually ride with a parent on the same camel. Older children may ride alone with guides nearby. Confirm the rule for your child.
Is the 7 hour Merzouga camel trek good for a toddler?
It is a long day. The listing says all ages and fitness levels, but 7 hours with a toddler is not a toddler plan. A short ride near the camp is the better first experience.
What if my child is scared of the camel?
Do not force it. A dune walk, a 4x4 transfer or dinner at the camp can replace the ride. Ask about the cancellation policy before you book.
Do I need a helmet for a camel ride?
The listings we checked do not mention helmets. Ask the operator if you want one. A handler walking beside the camel matters more for a young child.
