Essaouira beach is not a safe swimming beach for toddlers. It is a wide Atlantic beach with wind, waves and tides. A toddler can splash at the edge on a calm day, but the water is not a place for a long swim. The safest plan is the medina end of the main beach, an adult within arm’s reach and a short water session.

Essaouira beach with a toddler: the short answer

The beach is wide and the sand is easy. The water is the part that needs a plan. The wind can turn a calm surface into chop, and the tide changes how much beach you have.

The useful question is not “Is the beach safe?” It is “Where can a toddler touch the water with an adult within arm’s reach?” The answer is the shallow edge, near the medina end, on a day when the surface is calm.

What the beach is like

The main beach runs south from the medina and the ramparts. A wide paved promenade runs along it, so a stroller works on the promenade. On the sand, a carrier is easier.

Wind and waves

Essaouira is a wind and kite surf destination. The trade wind can blow strongly from April through September. A calm morning is not guaranteed, so check the wind forecast for the day.

When the surface is choppy, the beach is still good for sand, shells and a walk. The water can wait. A flat looking surface can still have a current, and a small toddler can be knocked over by a wave that looks harmless from the beach.

Tides and the shallow edge

The tide changes the shape of the beach. At low tide there is a wide strip of wet sand. At high tide the usable beach shrinks. Check a tide chart before you go and pick a spot with a clear exit.

The water at the medina end is shallow. That is the part for a toddler to splash. The water north of the fishing port, in front of the medina, is rocky with dangerous currents and is not safe for swimming.

Lifeguards

At peak times there are lifeguards at the main beach, but cover is not guaranteed. A lifeguard is a bonus, not a plan. Keep an adult within arm’s reach of the child at all times.

The best Essaouira beach zone for toddlers

The medina end is the easiest. It has the calmer waves, the sunbeds and the cafes. It is also the closest to the town and the shortest walk with a toddler.

The far end is the surf and camel zone, and it is a longer walk from the medina. It can be quieter, but fewer people also means fewer people to help if something goes wrong.

For a toddler, the rule is simple. The child can stand in the shallows, the surface is calm and an adult is in the water within arm’s reach. If any of those is missing, stay on the sand.

What to check before you go

  • The wind forecast for the day.
  • The tide and the time of high water.
  • Whether a lifeguard is on duty.
  • Where the shallowest edge is.
  • The nearest cafe or hotel for a toilet and shade.
  • The child’s cold tolerance and water confidence.

A windbreak helps with the sand and gives the child a patch of calm. A warm layer and a towel make the walk back easier.

Getting there

Essaouira is reached by bus or road from Marrakech. The train does not serve Essaouira. The Morocco trains with kids guide explains where the train does and does not go.

A day trip from Marrakech is a long day for a toddler. If you book one, treat it as a beach taster, not a full beach day. Confirm the child seat and the pickup before you book.
