Do taxis in Marrakech have car seats? No. Street taxis do not carry child seats, and Moroccan law does not require a taxi to supply one. If you are landing at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) with a baby or a toddler, the seat has to come from your booking or your own bag. This guide sits inside our getting around Morocco with kids coverage.

What the law says about car seats in Marrakech taxis

Morocco’s road traffic code is Law 52-05. Article 185, item 34 bans children under 10 from the front seats of a motor vehicle. Keep a young child in the back.

Article 184, item 22 penalizes carrying more passengers than the vehicle is authorized to take. In practice, a petit taxi takes three passengers plus the driver. Travel guides put a shared grand taxi at six passengers plus the driver. The exact number can vary by vehicle and local rules, so check before you get in.

Neither Article 184 nor Article 185 requires a taxi to supply a child seat. That does not make a lap safe. A child on a lap is not restrained, and a belt cannot protect a child who is not using it properly. Use a proper child seat, or do not ride.

Cars must have seat belts under Article 184, item 17. If the belt is missing, broken or disabled, do not ride with a child.

The law can change. These details were checked in October 2026, and our editorial policy explains how we check sources and date them.

Petit taxi or grand taxi: how many passengers fit

A petit taxi is the small city car. It takes three passengers plus the driver. Two adults and two children already need two petits, or one larger vehicle. A child still takes a seat, even on a lap.

A grand taxi is larger and often shared. It usually takes six passengers plus the driver. Newer vans vary. A grand taxi still does not carry a child seat. The FCDO notes that petit taxi drivers often pick up other customers during the journey, which matters when you are installing a seat for a child.

VehiclePassengers plus driverChild seatBest use
Petit taxiThreeNoShort city rides without children, or two adults and one child
Grand taxiUsually six, sharedNoLarger groups, but confirm the vehicle and the luggage space
Private transferDepends on the vehicleOnly if bookedAirport runs and families who need a specific seat

Luggage and a stroller take space. A petit taxi with three passengers and a folded stroller is already tight. A private van or a grand taxi is the easier choice for a family with bags.

The age and seat matrix

Seat type should follow weight and height, not age alone. Use the age band as a guide, then check the seat label.

Age guideSeat to ask forStreet taxiWhat to book
0 to 1Rear facing infant seat, usually up to 10 kgNo seatA private transfer with an infant seat in the booking
1 to 4Forward facing child seat, usually 9 to 18 kgNo seatA private transfer with a child seat, or your own seat
4 to 8Booster seat, usually 15 to 36 kgNo seatA private transfer with a booster, or your own booster
8 to 12Booster until the adult belt fits properlyNo seatA booster if the belt crosses the neck or stomach
13 and overAdult seat beltNo seatA working belt in the back

A rear facing seat must never go in front of an active airbag. If you bring your own seat, practice the install with the belt alone before you travel. Many street taxis are older sedans, so ask before you rely on ISOFIX.

The last 200 meters: stroller and luggage

A transfer can drop you at the nearest point a car can reach, not at the riad door. In the medina that can mean a walk through narrow lanes with bags, a stroller and a tired child. A carrier is easier than a stroller for that last stretch. If you are still choosing a base, our guide to where to stay in Marrakech with kids covers the drop off and neighborhood access.

Tell the transfer operator if you have a stroller, a travel crib or large luggage. A petit taxi may not fit all of it. A private van is the safer booking when space is tight.

How to book a Marrakech taxi with a car seat

The seat only appears if it is part of the booking. A message that says “we can try” is not a booking. Look for a seat type that is a line item, a stated weight range, installation before pickup, a private vehicle and clear cancellation terms. Get the seat confirmed in writing.

Kiwitaxi

The Kiwitaxi Marrakech Menara page lists an infant seat up to 10 kg, a child seat for 9 to 18 kg and a booster for 15 to 36 kg. Add the seat at booking. The driver installs it, and a small fee may apply. Free cancellation runs to the deadline in your voucher.

Viator

The Viator private RAK airport transfer says infant seats are available, the transfer is private, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. It does not show a seat selection step. Message the operator with the child’s age and weight, ask for the exact seat type, and keep the reply.

Bring your own seat

If you already own a travel seat, bringing it is the cheapest option. It works in any private car with a working belt. Practice the install with the belt alone at home, and check the seat label for the weight range. For a single airport ride, a transfer with the seat included is less hassle.

Other platforms may list a child seat. The listing is not the booking. Confirm the seat type, weight range and fit in writing before you pay. If the answer is vague, choose another operator.

What to do if your Marrakech taxi arrives without a car seat

The boring fix beats all of this: book the seat into the reservation.

Booking checklist

  • Book at least 16 hours ahead. Kiwitaxi asks for that for driver availability.
  • Choose the seat type by weight, not by age alone.
  • Put the child’s age and weight in the booking notes.
  • Ask for the exact seat type in writing.
  • Save the confirmation on your phone.
  • Check the seat at pickup before you drive away.
  • Keep a backup operator or a plan to wait.
  • Do not accept a lap, a broken belt or a seat that does not fit.

FAQ

Do taxis in Marrakech have car seats?

No. Petit taxis and grand taxis do not carry child seats. Moroccan road traffic law does not require a taxi to provide one.

Can my baby sit on my lap in a taxi?

A lap is not a child restraint. It gives a baby no crash protection. Use a booked infant seat or bring your own.

Is it illegal to ride in a Marrakech taxi without a car seat?

Moroccan road traffic law does not contain an explicit child car seat requirement for taxis. It does ban children under 10 from the front seats. Safety is the reason to use a seat even when the law does not spell it out.

How many passengers fit in a petit taxi?

Three passengers plus the driver. A family of four needs two petits or a larger vehicle.

How many passengers fit in a grand taxi?

Usually six passengers plus the driver when shared. Newer vans vary. Confirm the vehicle and the luggage space before you book.

Do Marrakech airport transfers include car seats?

Only if the seat is a line item in the booking. Kiwitaxi lets you add an infant, child or booster seat. Viator lists infant seats as available, but you should confirm the exact seat in writing.

Should I bring my own car seat to Marrakech?

For a toddler, it can work if you can install it with a belt and practice before you travel. For a single airport ride, a transfer with the seat included is easier. Many street taxis do not have ISOFIX.

What about rental cars?

Ask the rental company for the seat type, weight range and fit. Check the seat before you leave the lot. Do not assume the seat is installed correctly.

Book the seat before you book the rest of the trip. The seat is the constraint.
